Denison Iowa Recreation, Shopping and Attractions

Denison Iowa has recreation in abundance.  Whether you're interested in baseball, softball, soccer, camping, fishing, golf, cycling, swimming, tennis, or just relaxing, we have something for you.

Denison is home to the Aquatic Fun Center with indoor and outdoor pool and water attractions.  Majestic Hills Golf Course, an 18-hole, championship course, is located next to the Boulders Conference Center and the Boulders Inn and Suites.  The "Wheels to Heels" trail is a four-mile, hard surfaced, hiking/biking trail that winds from the eastern edge of Denison through Yellow Smoke Park.  Yellow Smoke is a county park with facilities for picnicking, camping, private cabins, swimming, canoeing, and fishing.   Denison is also dotted with various city and neighborhood parks.

Located on the eastern edge of the Loess Hills, Denison is the perfect place to begin exploring this unique landform.  The Loess Hills are a fragile, geological wonder formed of loess (meaning wind-blown) soil deposits.  Loess is only found in western Iowa and China.  In Crawford County, loess can go as deep as 200 feet in places.  Original plant and animal species have been protected by the rugged loess topography.  A large number of the rare animals and plants of Iowa call these hills home.  The Loess Hills today are affectionately call "The Fragile Giants."

If you are looking for diverse artistic and cultural activities, Denison has what you are looking for.  This is evident in its products as well as the entertainment it attracts.  Named for one of Denison's most famous residents, the Donna Reed Theater for the Performing Arts is located on the corner of Broadway and Main.

The Fine Arts Center, located at the Denison High School, is a 700-seat arts center that has become the home of many school and community performances.  The Crawford County Arts Council brings in performances from various musical groups frequently.  The Donna Reed Festival National Scholarship Finals Competition is performed here annually the third week of June.
